Why God Made Teachers

by Kevin William Huff

When God created teachers,
He gave us special friends
To help us understand His world
And truly comprehend
The beauty and the wonder
Of everything we see,
And become a better person
With each discovery.

When God created teachers,
He gave us special guides
To show us ways in which to grow
So we can all decide
How to live and how to do
What's right instead of wrong,
To lead us so that we can lead
And learn how to be strong.

Why God created teachers,
In His wisdom and His grace,
Was to help us learn to make our world
A better, wiser place.

4 Key Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for Tests

BY SYLVAN LEARNING

PARENTING

In a perfect world, every day at school would be filled with interesting, hands-on learning experiences. But even the most progressive schools must determine whether or not their students have successfully mastered the academic material on the lesson plan. For better or for worse, that means that inevitably your student will have to endure classroom exams. Here are some tips to help your child prepare for tests, hopefully changing what can sometimes be a daunting experience for students to an anticipated opportunity to show what they’ve learned.

Start studying early.

Planning ahead with your child is one of the best strategies for acing classroom tests. Spacing study sessions apart has proven to be a significantly more effective tactic than cramming during one long study period. Students following this approach can group review topics into different sessions, take on small chunks of material at a time, and cover test topics more than once. Studying the test material two weeks before the actual assessment builds a foundation for later review, cementing the major themes in your child’s brain.

Practice the test format.

Be sure that your child is ready for the kinds of questions that they will encounter on the test. Even if students know the subject matter they are being tested on, they can often be thrown off by the format of the assessment. If the test is multiple choice, make sure your child understands techniques for eliminating answers. If they anticipate essay questions, create possible test questions and walk them through the steps of analyzing the question and taking notes or drawing a diagram.

Test-taking also involves a limited time frame, so make sure your student is prepared to move onto the next question if one seems too difficult at first, rather than spending the whole test period trying to solve a single problem. Perfectionists may need practice writing down an acceptable answer, rather than laboring to determine the perfect answer. Replicating test settings through practice tests is a high-utility study technique when it comes to preparing students for a big exam.

Go in with the right attitude.

Help your child understand that one test won’t make or break their educational career, and remind that their preparation has set them up for success. Studying improves confidence, which in turn has been proven to be one of the primary non-cognitive predictors of positive school performance. At the same time, kids who are overconfident are more likely to rush through the test without checking their work carefully. So encourage your child to reach the middle ground, studying enough that they feel prepared, but not so much that they lose focus during the test.

Stay healthy.

While we all want our kids to be well rested and eat a good breakfast every school day, it is especially important to engage in these healthy habits on test days. If there is a choice between an extra half hour of studying and an extra half hour of sleep, insist that your student opts for the Z’s; studies show that our brains operate best when we are well rested.

Similarly, a healthy diet can make a real difference in your child’s test scores. Yogurt, eggs and blueberries are great brain foods for the morning before a test, while nuts and cottage cheese are some of the best snacks to eat immediately beforehand.

For the Week of April 8 to 11th

Lord, I’m weary. My energy is sagging, and my motivation is lagging. And I am so in need of you. I need your strength and your fresh touch to get back on track again. Your Word says the joy of the Lord is my strength. If that's true, then I need your joy to replace all the bone-tired parts of my mind, body, and soul.

Lord, help me not to quit, to keep running the race faithfully, and to find strength in that safe, secret place of yours, under the shadow of the Almighty.

For the Week of February 25-28th

Dear God,

Why is it so hard for me to believe that spring is coming?

It’s silly to doubt it, I know. In all my years watching the seasons pass, spring has never once failed me, no matter how tardy it may seem. The sun always comes home from a long vacation to melt the forlorn snow. The grass emerges, a little brown at first, then verdant and full of life. The birds return, making nests, whistling solos into a warm blue sky. No matter how long it takes, winter always comes to an end.

Give me a heart that rejoices in the delights and sorrows of each passing year, a heart that grows warmer with every winter it endures.

Teach me to believe in spring.

Amen.

A Winter Prayer

Let us huddle together this morning,

our community a place of warmth in our lives

as we share the flame of hope and connection.

Let us allow the frost of isolation and bitterness to melt away

as we open ourselves to a sense of peace and spirit.

We extend our thoughts to all those who are cold this morning,

lacking shelter or love to keep them warm.

Let us wrap our prayers around them and each other like scarves,

and wish each other safe journeys through the storm.

May we be insulated from fear as the earth is insulated by the snow,

And, like bulbs, may we continue to grow and open inside, despite the cold,

Ready for the spring, to stretch and grow towards justice.

Amen

For the Week of January 7th-11th

A prayer for the New Year!

Dear God,

Thank you that you make all things new. Thank you for all that you've allowed into our lives this past year, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need you and rely on your presence filling us every single day.

We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We ask that you will guide our decisions and turn our hearts to deeply desire you above all else.

We ask for your wisdom, for your strength and power to be constantly present within us. We pray you would make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. Give us ability beyond what we feel able, let your gifts flow freely through us, so that you would be honored by our lives, and others would be drawn to you.

We pray for your protection over our families and friends. We ask for your hand to cover us and keep us distanced from the evil intent of the enemy; that you would be a barrier to surround us, that we’d be safe in your hands. We pray that you would give us discernment and insight beyond our years, to understand your will, hear your voice, and know your ways.

Shine your light in us, through us, over us. May we make a difference in this world, for your glory and purposes. Set you way before us. May all your plans succeed. We may reflect your peace and hope to a world that so desperately needs your presence and healing.

To you be glory and honor, in this New Year, and forever.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

For the Week of January 7th, 2019, students will be settling back into routines.  Some will be finding their new classrooms, moving lockers, and helping their teacher settle into the new classroom, some will be settling into the routine of the new semester that began early December and hoping to find where they left off before the break.  Regardless of where the students will be going or what they will be doing, they are going to be welcomed back with the Grace of God in the classroom. The St. Matthew staff members are excited to get back into routine and see the faces of the students as they eagerly enter the hallways for the remainder of the school year.

This week we are excited to welcome Mrs. Paul back from her maternity leave!

Basketball game is Wednesday.

Our new portables will be blessed by Father Leon later in the week.

For the Week of December 10-14

Dear God,

Help us to keep our focus first on Christ this season. Please forgive us for giving too much time and attention on other things. Help us to reflect again, on what Christmas is really all about. Thank you that you came to give new life, peace, hope, and joy. Thank you that your power is made perfect in our weakness. Help us to remember that the gift of Christ, Immanuel, is our greatest treasure, not just at Christmas, but for the whole year through. Fill us with your joy and the peace of your Spirit. Direct our hearts and minds towards you. Thank you for your reminder that both in seasons of celebration and in seasons of brokenness, you’re still with us. For you never leave us. Thank you for your daily powerful Presence in our lives, that we can be assured your heart is towards us, your eyes are over us, and your ears are open to our prayers. Thank you that you surround us with favor as with a shield, and we are safe in your care. We choose to press in close to you today…and keep you first in our hearts and lives.

Amen

For the Week of December 3-6

The word 'Advent' comes from Latin and means "coming;" its purpose is to look forward to the coming of Christ to Earth; it was a season that focused on waiting. So, "Advent means something new is coming. The dawn of a new and better era. This is really what the Christmas season is all about, isn’t it? It’s the celebration of the ADVENT of a new era. God broke into time and space and entered our world"

Through prayer, we can enter into God's world and ask Him to prepare our hearts the way He prepared all of history to receive the gift of His Son. Ask the Father to use this time during Advent to cut away the distractions and make your life a place of warmth and openness.

This Week at St. Matt's:

We are into the Advent Season.  The time to prepare our hearts for the Christmas Season and the reason we celebrate.  Older students will be reading an advent prayer over the intercom now until the Christmas break.

HAPPY MONDAY!!!

This week at St. Matt's

Parent Teacher Interviews

Wednesday and Thursday, November 7th and 8th, St. Matthew School teachers will be conducting Parent/Teacher Interviews from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on both nights.  We hope to see you at the school for this important event.

Our elementary school teachers, from Pre-K to 5, have scheduled appointments with parents that will last 10 minutes. For parents with more than one child in our elementary school, your appointments were scheduled so that you can see all your children’s teachers in a consecutive orderly manner.  Please note that if you also have children in our middle school, these teachers do not schedule appointments. Middle school teachers see parents on first-come, first-serve basis.

Mrs. Hughes will be available Thursday, and Mrs. Kirtzinger will be available on Wednesday.  They would love to see you!

Please be reminded, we will not be sending out report cards or progress reports.  All information can be found online within PowerSchool.  Please be aware all information was sent home earlier in the year.  We will have staff available at parent-teacher interviews to assist with PowerSchool login or feel free to come into the school and someone will be more than happy to set you up.

We look forward to seeing you this week!

Psalm 86:13, 'Great is your love toward me.'

You already see the ways I will fall short and mess up. But right now, I consciously tuck Your whisper of absolute love for me into the deepest part of my heart. I recognize Your love for me is not based on my performance. You love me warts and all. That's amazing. But what's most amazing is that the Savior of the world would desire a few minutes with me this morning. Lord, help me to forever remember what a gift it is to sit with You like this. Amen."

For the Week of September 4-7

Welcome to all those returning and to all the new students and families to St. Matthew Catholic School. This year is going to be another fun-filled year with some changes.

As you may have noticed, we are getting an addition to the school. 4 more classrooms will be added to the school as we are growing every year and couldn't be more proud.
We are hoping to be moving into the new classrooms by November so until then we will be using alternative entrances into the school which students will learn about on the first day.

We'd like to start your new year off with a Blessing to bring you a fresh, bright school year.

Prayer for the Start of the School Year

Loving God,
Our creator, our saviour, our companion,
bless this journey of a new school year that we undertake today.
Refresh our souls
and renew our spirits
as we embrace the beautiful ministry you have called us to.
We welcome those who are new to this community and
ask that you strengthen them to share the wonderful gifts you have given
them.
Lord, make our hearts pure as we prepare for the return of students to this
school,
and may you guide them to return with open hearts and minds eager to learn.
We ask this in Your name,
Amen

First Addition Week at a Glance 2018-2019

Just over a week before we begin another exhilarating school year! WoW!!  Where did the summer go?

Admin, teachers, office and support staff have been busy getting ready for the upcoming school year.  We hope you are refreshed and ready to tackle on your next year.

Few reminders before the first day of school:

*Friday, August 31st at 2:30 pm is Meet the Staff.  Students can pick up school supplies or bring in your own, get acquainted with your homeroom teacher and your school schedule.  A perfect way to get rid of any "jitters" you may be feeling about the first day of school.  Once meeting your teacher and some new friends...FIRST DAY will be a BREEZE!

*September 4th, First Day of School!

      One week before school:

1. Start your School Sleep Routine

Routines can be relaxed in the summer, so a week prior to school is a good time to adjust the family schedule to get everyone back into morning and bedtime habits.

Establish bed times for the school year and start following them
Ensure the entire family is up when they would be for school
For older children, give them their own alarm clock and let them practice using it
Ensure that the entire family get involved so that your child doesn’t feel alone with these changes

 2. Promote Healthy Eating Habits

Nutrition is extremely important; it’s hard to cope well when you are tired or hungry, so provide your child nutritious and frequent snacks and build in regular routines.

Start having your meals around regular mealtimes
Ask your child to help you create a school lunch menu for the first week of school
Allow your child to pick out his or her favourite snacks
Allow your child to help you plan your dinner meals -this way s(he) will have a yummy dinner to look forward to

3. Shop for Supplies

Make picking out school supplies a fun task!

Create a list of school supplies with your child
Plan a fun shopping trip to pick out supplies

4. Encourage Your Child to Share His or Her Fears

Talk to your child about his or her worries and practice coping skills

Touch base with your child at a regular time each day to discuss your child’s worries and encourage him or her to problem solve and plan
        Role-play with your child
Focus on the positive aspects – ask your child to list the three things that s(he)is most excited about on the first day
Practice calm breathing with your child – s(he) can learn to use this when her anxiety rises
Develop cognitive coping cards that your child can use to help cope with anxiety

A couple of days before school:

5. Do a dry-run

Go to school several times – walking, driving, or going to the bus pick up zone
For young children, describe and draw out the route and include how long it will take
For younger children, go to the schoolyard and play a few times before the first day of school

6. Tour the School - Meet the Staff -

For new students, take a tour of the school
Show your child the classrooms and the bathrooms
Meet your child’s teacher with your child present, if possible

7. Plan the Outfits

Ask your child to help choose the outfits for the first week of school
Let your child pick out his or her favorite outfit for the first day

8. Pack the Backpack

Together with your child, pack the backpack the night before, including treats

9. Choose a Special Object

For younger children who are nervous about separating, suggest taking a special object to school that reminds him or her of home
Put a reassuring note in a child’s lunch can also help ease separation anxiety

The first day of school:

10. Walk with a Friend

Try and arrange that your child walks with a friend to school for the first couple of days
Arrange play days with school mates leading up to the first day

11. Talk to the Teacher

Let the teacher know that your child is having some separation anxiety

12. Praise and Reward

Most importantly, praise and reward your child for brave behavior!

For the Week of September 10-14

We hope your first week was a smooth transition back into the everyday school routine.  We have a few events this week and a few reminders for the upcoming school year.

Let's start with a Blessing for the week ahead,

Lord, bless our journey
through this coming week.
May the pace be steady,
paths made safe,
no obstacles impede,
and conversations
with fellow travellers
be fruitful and uplifting.
Lord, bless our journey
through this coming week.

In Jesus,

Amen
